"One of the world’s great music festivals has reminded me how strong national feelings can still be in music. The festival started last weekend, and the scale and lavishness of what’s in store is astonishing. There’s a slew of great orchestras: the Philharmonia and RPO from Britain, the Maggio Musicale Orchestra from Italy, the St Petersburg Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw.
Among the chamber musicians there’s pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, violinist Christian Tetzlaff and Sarah Chang, and the “period instrument” bands Les Musiciens du Louvre and Il Giardino Armonico.
It’s the kind of programme you’d expect at one of those glitzy middle-European festivals such as Salzburg or Lucerne."
....................................

So why is the the music festival so carefully protected? Prestige and cultural tourism are part of the answer, but the real reason I think is given away by the title: “The International George Enescu Festival”. Enescu is Romania’s great unknown musical treasure. One of the greatest prodigies who ever lived, Enescu’s talent was matched by a burning desire to make Romania’s treasury of folk music known to the world. But there was nothing parochial about Enescu. He spent much of his life in Paris and his music is part of the European mainstream of the early and mid-20th century."
